Dear Supervisor _________,

My name is ________________, and I am a resident of District [  ].

I am writing today to urge your support for sustained and increased funding for women-serving organizations in San Francisco. As detailed in the San Francisco Women’s Housing Coalitions report, women experiencing homelessness in our city face uniquely urgent and often life-threatening challenges, yet they are critically underserved in our housing and service systems.

In 2023, an estimated 3,179 women experienced homelessness in San Francisco, representing 41% of the city’s total homeless population. Yet, only 5% of available shelter beds, including transitional and respite care, are reserved for women. A significant portion of unhoused women are survivors of gender-based violence, and are often left navigating an under-resourced system, with serious gaps in coordinated care, limited safety in co-ed spaces, and a lack of accessible, supportive services.

I was pleased that the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution this April, declaring San Francisco a sanctuary for women seeking housing. And I am proud of the City’s voters for passing Proposition A in March 2024, dedicating $30 million of the historic $300 million bond to providing essential trauma-informed support for survivors of homelessness, street violence, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and/or human trafficking. These commitments show that San Francisco wants safety and security for women and gender-nonconforming individuals facing homelessness, but without the actual, tangible resources the impact of this legislation remains limited.

I urge you to protect the investments that currently exist, and to invest in what’s needed, to truly make San Francisco a sanctuary for women seeking safety, housing, and security,

Thank you,
